Personal pampering without the high price

SIKESTON - In a world increasingly cluttered with noise and stress, a trip to a day spa can provide a chance to relax and rejuvenate.

But Sheila Armbruster, herself a hard-working woman, knows that many Southeast Missouri women don't have hundreds of dollars available to pay for pampering. So she and her partners created Defining Looks LLC, a full-

service spa, complete with all the services from soothing massages, beautifying facials and rejuvenating body wraps but without the high prices.

"We are trying to reach people who work hard and don't get a lot of the extras," said Armbruster, who along with her sisters, Lelia Busby and Robin Tinnon, and daughter, Melissa Jackson, opened Defining Looks. "We try to be a peaceful, relaxing, fun place for people to get pampered but who don't have hundreds of dollars to spend."

And Armbruster has combined their former business, Defining Looks, a permanent cosmetics business, along with the skills of herself and associates to create the spa at 818 S. Main St.

The permanent makeup services are still available. In addition to Armbruster, Tinnon, Jackson and Busby are certified to apply the cosmetic tattoos which are used to enhance eyebrows and lip color and define the eyes as eyeliner or the lips as lipliner.

But to the original services they have added a hair salon, staffed by stylists Rhonda Nolen, Kathy Spain and Busby. A full-service salon for men and women, the trio offers cuts, weaves, coloring and perms.

Alisa VanGennip, a massage therapist, is on staff. She provides Swedish and prenatal massages, hot stone massages, reflexology, and shiatsu, a form of Japanese massage using pressure.

In addition, Jackson does tattoos of all sizes.

Armbruster, a registered nurse, said her favorite part of the business is to be able to give customers facials, which includes a choice of microdermabrasion, chemical peels, masks, cleansers and moisturizers. Also Defining Looks offers waxing, to remove unwanted hair from the face, back, underarms or other areas and ear, eyebrow or belly-button piercing.

Before opening in their new location in April, the women with some assistance from husbands and friends, renovated the interior of the business to create a Mediterranean atmosphere. Entering through the salon, there is a waiting room, complete with computer where customers can view the latest in hairstyles.

An adjacent area is set aside for the permanent makeup services. There is a sauna available and customers can combine a sauna with a full-body sugar scrub or full-body clay mask.

Also a room is set aside for those seeking a massage or who want to take advantage of the vibrating bed. A dressing room and shower complete the set-up.

Armbruster emphasized they have worked to keep prices reasonable. They have developed several special packages which combine services or even a double massage for a couple.

While business is steadily growing as customers learn about the local get-

away, the women hope to see it continue to expand.

"I think Southeast Missouri women working really hard, they need a little reward," said Armbruster.
