Fundraising begins for home to be constructed in Sikeston

SIKESTON -- Just as a home is built from individual two-by-fours, nails and windows, every donation, large and small, will be important in funding the construction of Sikeston's first Habitat for Humanity home.

Roof trusses for the house can be purchased with a donation of $1,000 and $500 is enough for drywall supplies. A donation of $250 is enough to carpet for a room while $35 would cover the paint for that room. A $50 donation is like contributing a kitchen door; $100 is enough for a window. Even a donation as low as $25 is enough to purchase 50 pound box of nails.

Sikeston Area Habitat for Humanity's Public Relations/Development Committee met Wednesday to kick off fundraising efforts for construction of the home.

Kathy Hux was first selected as chair for the committee. Other committee members include David Strom, who is spearheading the corporate sponsor campaign, and Jackie Herndon, Barbie Collins, Robin Dial, Kim Wilcox, Jeremiah Reeves, Mary Griffith, Ron Eifert, Jane Ann Baker and Joan Rauls.

The goal is to raise $64,000 for construction of the home. Strom said he is researching Habitat for Humanity International's national partnerships to help achieve that goal.

Committee members discussed local corporate and small businesses that may be interested in contributing to the home construction project along with strategies to encourage participation.

Four applications for the family that will receive the home have been submitted so far, according to Karen Davis, chairman of the Sikeston Area Habitat for Humanity Steering Committee. Applications are still being accepted and will be screened by the Family Selection-Support Committee.

The homeowner family will be selected to partner with Habitat for Humanity in the construction of their house according to their need for simple, decent, affordable housing; their job-holding status and ability to repay the no-

profit, interest-free 20-year mortgage; and their willingness to work in partnership with Habitat. Habitat partner families must be U.S. citizens.

The Site Selection Committee has also made progress with their task -- determining where the home will be built, according to Davis. "A lot has been selected," she confirmed.

Davis said there are details that must be worked out with city officials before the address can be announced, however.

Habitat For Humanity offers "a hand up, not a hand out," according to Sikeston Habitat for Humanity officials. The homeowner partner family must invest a minimum of 350 hours of "sweat equity" before they can move into their house.

Local Habitat For Humanity officials are encouraging individuals, organizations, civic groups, youth groups, ball teams, school organizations and churches in the area to take advantage of this opportunity make a difference in our community and someone's life here by becoming involved in the Sikeston Area Habitat for Humanity.

Sikeston's Habitat for Humanity, which officially began operations here in January, is affiliated with the Cape Area Habitat for Humanity, operating independently with its own funding but under the authorization of the Cape chapter, a non-profit organization.
