SIKESTON - Fire damaged a shed and workshop and threatened a connecting workshop Tuesday night at the Earl Cook residence, 401 Prosperity. A garden tractor and camping gear were damaged or destroyed in the blaze.
EAST PRAIRIE - An 18-year-old East Prairie youth escaped serious injury Friday morning in the crash of a Quick Silver XM with 48 horsepower engine near the Mississippi County Airport, according to Sheriff Avery Hutcheson. Mike L. Jackson, a student pilot, was flying the two-seater aircraft for the first time Friday. "He was lucky, real lucky." Hutcheson commented about the incident. "He was shaken up a bit, but not injured." The sheriff said apparently the youth had just lost control while flying in unstable air created by gusty winds.
SIKESTON - Detectives with Sikeston Public Safety are investigating a burglary at the Country Club Maintenance Shed that occurred between 3-5 p.m. on May 14. Taken was a chainsaw, woodcutters kit and a radio. The total loss was estimated to be over $500.
SCOTT CITY - The Kelly Hawks baseball team captured a 2A district title Thursday, with a 3-2 win over the favored Notre Dame Bulldogs. Team members presented with the winning trophy after the big victory were: Brad Kolwyck, Brandon Pattengill, Shawn Koch, Justin Vetter, John Welter, Denver Stuckey, John Livingston, Jason Glastetter, Ben Klipfel, Jim Hulshof, John Ziegler and Coach Mike Scott.
SIKESTON - Mandy Davis, a 1997 graduate of Sikeston Senior High School received the Standard-Democrat Journalism Scholarship at the Senior High School Awards Assembly.
