Cause of outage identified

Thursday, April 19, 2007

SIKESTON -- Sikeston Board of Municipal Utilities crews have identified the cause of Wednesday's citywide power outage.

"It was a house cat," said Wayne McSpadden, operations manager for BMU. "A house cat climbed one of our 69,000 volt poles down by the power plant, crawled out on an insulator and electrocuted itself. It caused the fault."

The power went out at about 3:15 a.m. Wednesday and remained off for about 42 minutes, according to McSpadden.

McSpadden said as it was very close to the substation, the fault on that high voltage line was enough to not only trip breakers in the Southwest Power Administration switchyard, "it also kicked the power plant offline."

The power plant remained offline early today, but officials hoped to have it online later today, McSpadden said.
