SIKESTON - The Tanner School, located a few miles north of Sikeston, burned Thursday prior to closing time.

SIKESTON - Residents of the R-6 school district will go to the polls Tuesday to decide the fate of a $1.3 million public school bond issue. Light turnouts have been the case in previous school board issues. The last bond issue was held in 1962, when it was voted on twice because of a property evaluation miscalculation.

SIKESTON - The crap table at the Sikeston Elks Club Casino Night appeared to be a favorite spot for those who attended the annual event. More than 100 people tried their luck and tested their skills at the several Las Vegas-style games made available. The event is expected to clear over $1,000 which will be used for club activities and programs.

SIKESTON - The State of Missouri will add its assistance to bring about the expansion of Good Humor-Breyers in Sikeston. The Missouri Department of Economic Development has committed to expansion of the existing enterprise zone, programs to train new workers for the plant and a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant to the city to help upgrade roads leading into the plant site, according to Gov. Mel Carnahan.


SIKESTON - Rodney Pensel, Sikeston Middle School principal, has received the Southeast Young Alumni Merit Award for illustrating professional growth, service and individual character. Pensel will be honored during a commencement ceremony May 17. The award is presented annually by Southeast Missouri State University's Alumni Association.
