NMCC falls to Cape Central at the buzzer; Oran routs Woodland

Tuesday, February 6, 2007

NEW MADRID -- The New Madrid County Central Lady Eagles dropped a heartbreaker on Monday night as they fell to SEMO Conference foe Cape Central at the buzzer.

The Lady Eagles seemed to be in control for most of the game, but the Lady Tigers made a late push to pull out the victory.

Cape Central's Courtney Schuessler hit the game-winning shot right at the buzzer on an 18-footer.

"We played a good solid ballgame," said NMCC coach Lance Tollison. "It was evenly played by both teams. We got outplayed in the fourth quarter. We controlled it until about two minutes to go and we couldn't quite put it away. We played a good ballgame. It was good for us."

NMCC (9-11, 1-6 SEMO) trailed 10-9 after one quarter but grabbed a 20-16 lead heading into halftime. The Lady Eagles still led 31-27 heading into the fourth quarter.

"It came down to the wire," said Tollison. "Cape's a big ball team. I wish we could've gotten the 'W', but we hung in there with a 5A school which is tough to do in the SEMO Conference."

NMCC was led by freshman Shameka Williams' 22 points.

"She continues to do a good job," said Tollison. "I can't complain about her at all. This was one of her more consistent games. She had probably four or five steals and she was able to get to the free throw line several times. She's averaging 20 and she does it every night."

Tollison also noted a strong effort from Paige Jimmerson.

"Jimmerson stepped into starting lineup the last few games," said Tollison. "I'm sure she had 10 or 11 rebounds. She's really stepped up her game here lately."

Cape Central (8-11) was led by Wendi Zickfield, a 6-2 post, with 14 points.

NMCC will host Delta today at 6 p.m. in a makeup game.

The Oran Lady Eagles came from behind at home on Monday night to defeat the Woodland Lady Cardinals, 53-52.

Oran outscored Woodland 18-12 in the fourth quarter, overcoming a five-

point third quarter deficit.

Junior Callie Kielhofner led Oran with 19 points. Senior forward Erica Michelsen had 14 points, including a big 3-pointer late in the fourth quarter to lead the Lady Eagles down the stretch.

Oran (10-8) hosts Meadow Heights tonight at 6 p.m.

The Risco Tigers evened their Tri-County Conference with a 80-44 road win over the Delta C-7 Chargers on Monday night.

Senior Ricky Davis caught fire for the Tigers in the first half. Davis hit eight 3-

pointers in the half and had 32 points to lead Risco into the half with a 51-23 advantage.

"We were hot from the 3-point line in early on," said Risco head coach Brandon Blankenship. "They were in a zone and we hit 11 3's in the first half to give us a nice lead. The nice thing about the win tonight was that we got a chance to get a lot of players into the game and gain some valuable varsity experience."

Davis ended his night with 41 points. Kyle Hayes had 15 points and Kyle White chipped in 13 points for Risco.

Sloan Richardson led Delta C-7 with 34 points.

Risco (5-13) travels to Scott County Central tonight at 6 p.m.
