BEMENT COMMUNITY -- Veatrice Pauline Shepard, 92, a resident of the Bement Community in Mississippi County, died at 7:45 p.m. May 18, 2007, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

Born July 24, 1914, in Winston County, Ala., daughter of the late Francis Newton and Essie Laura Barker Taylor, she had lived most of her life in Mississippi County where she served devotedly as a minister's wife while her husband, the Rev. Norman Shepard, served as pastor of seven churches and interim pastor of seven additional churches in the Charleston Baptist Association over a period of 40 years. In addition to filling various capacities in churches including Sunday school teacher, nursery worker and kitchen helper, she was a licensed practical nurse and employed with Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston as a private duty nurse for 10 years. She is remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, wonderful gardener and excellent cook.

On Oct. 28, 1933, she married the Rev. W. Norman Shepard, who preceded her in death on Aug. 20, 2006.

Survivors include: two sons and daughters-in-law, James Earl and Jaceena Shepard of Town Creek, Ala., and Norman Eugene and Johnnie Shepard of Katy, Texas; one daughter and son-in-law, Norma Sharon and Ron Coppock of Alpharetta, Ga.; three sisters, Lorene Shepard of Matthews, Doloris Lingle of East Prairie and Emma Lou Poppe of East St. Louis, Ill.; and one sister-in-

law, Willa Faye Taylor of Kevil, Ky.

Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Richard Sloan of Arab, Ala., Chris Sloan of Norfolk, Va., Karen Reid of Jacksonville, Ala., Kirk Shepard of Cape Canaveral, Fla., Sara Latham of Chicago and Taylor Coppock and Caitlin Coppock, both of Alpharetta, Ga.; and 11 great-grandchildren, Steven Chatham and Brian Chatham, both of Birmingham, Ala., Melinda Pinon of Jacksonville, Ala., Joy Lawson of Jonesboro, Ark., Alan Shepard of Huntsville, Ala., Amelia Shepard, Olivia Shepard and David Shepard, all of Cape Canaveral, Nicholas Latham and Andrew Latham, both of Chicago and Brandy Sloan of Arab.

She was preceded in death by one son, Terry Bruce Shepard; two daughters, Arlis Sue Shepard and Barbara Ann Shepard; three brothers, Jimmy Lee Taylor, Keith Taylor and Hampton Taylor; and one great-grandson, Shannon Sloan.

Services were conducted at 11 a.m. today at McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston. The Rev. Bob Medlock of Sikeston officiated.

Burial followed in the IOOF Cemetery.
