SIKESTON - The Sikeston Public Library will begin opening Sundays from 2-4 p.m. beginning this week. The Board of Trustees authorized the Sunday open hours as part of its commitment to improving library services.
ORAN - Kimberly Pullen, a senior at Oran High School, has been selected to compete in the Olympia National Scholastic Typing Contest. The typing competition will occur at the state and national levels. Miss Pullen is the daughter of Fred and Sharon Pullen.
BENTON - At the Tuesday morning Scott County Commission meeting, several residents from the Mini Farms, located just north of Sikeston, met with the commissioners to discuss what steps need to be taken to reduce the flood water in their neighborhood. Residents were angry because they said they felt the commission had sold them out to the farmers when they cut a ditch through a neighboring levee.
SIKESTON - Three area residents were among winners recently announced as part of the 1996 Corn Growers Association (NCGA) National Corn Yield Contest in Missouri. C.G. Scott Jr. of Sikeston took first place with a yield of 267.97 bushels per acre; Kelly Barker of East Prairie was awarded second place with a yield of 244.83 bushels per acre; and Laura Hinkebien of Chaffee gathered third place honors with a yield of 249.75 bushels per acre.
