BENTON - Marcus Daniel Abernathy, 84, formerly of Canalou and Matthews, died June 16, 2007 at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.
Born Nov. 25, 1922 in Ripley, Miss., to the late Oscar L. Abernathy and Georgia Baker Abernathy Vickers, he was a retired farmer. He was a World War II veteran, serving as a sergeant in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the American Legion and Eagles of Sikeston. He was of the Baptist belief.
On June 14, 1986, in Benton, he married Mildred Bertrand Abernathy, who survives of the home.
Other survivors include: two sons and daughters-in-law, Danny and Ina Abernathy of Kansas, Ill. and John and Brenda Abernathy of Jackson; two daughters, Barbara Abernathy-Franklin of Robinson, Ill., and Doris Abernathy of Rockville Ind.; one stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, John and Paula Bertrand of Oran; two stepdaughters and one stepson-in-law, Cathy Ray of Benton and Debbie and Scott Sander of Scott City; one brother, Lee Abernathy of Paris, Ill.;; and 17 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
Visitation is from noon until time of services at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at Blanchard Funeral Chapel in Sikeston.
Pallbearers will be: Nick Abernathy, Johnny Fitzsimmons, Trent Ray, Cory Lambert, Mitch Sander, Matt Sander, Jamie Essner and Darren McIntosh.
Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories cemetery in Sikeston.
