SIKESTON - More than 80 volunteer Christian builders, mostly from Texas, are helping construct the Fellowship Baptist Church on Ables Road this week. The builders, who are predominately Southern Baptist, will help in the construction this week only, but volunteers from other states are scheduled to pitch in also. Workers in the organization pay their own expenses and use their vacation time to work.


SIKESTON - The Sikeston Development Council Monday night unanimously approved funding for an industrial trip to the East Coast this week. Economic Development Specialist Mary Doggett asked SDC for approval to travel to Connecticut Thursday to meet with an industrial prospect.

SIKESTON - The Standard-Democrat Little League team ran away with the 1997 Little League Burger King Dollar selling contest. The Musial League team sold 1,450 of them, earning a party at Burger King.


DEXTER - The Sikeston Sharks opened their season with a second-place finish behind host team Dexter, grabbing 311 points in the swim meet on Saturday.


SIKESTON - In near perfect golfing weather, 23 year-old Chad Campbell of Andrews, Texas, walked away from the Bootheel Golf Club with $15,000 in his back pocket on Sunday. Campbell went 16 under par to win the NGA/
