SIKESTON - Sikeston now owns the Harvey Parks Airport located at the east end of the city, according to information received by Mayor Marvin L. Carroll.

SIKESTON - Members of the Sikeston Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors voted to endorse the city's purchase of the Missouri Utilities facilities. The board took the vote after hearing a talk given by Dick Inman, manager of the Board of Public Works.

NEW MADRID - Excavation at the New Madrid County Port is under way with county work crews running dirt scrapers which will remove 135,000-140,000 cubic yards of dirt from the harbor area. The dirt is being used to build up the retaining levee around the 90-acre site in the St. Jude Industrial Park.

CHARLESTON - Farm chemicals valued at $14,580 were stolen early today in a break-in at Delta Growers Co-op, Highway 105, according to Mississippi County Sheriff Avery Hutcheson. The alarm at the co-op, located about midway between Charleston and East Prairie, sounded at 1:03 a.m. today. Deputies arrived at the scene some 12 minutes later to find a hole had been chopped in a corner of the warehouse.

SIKESTON - Sixteen-year-old Derek Robertson won the grand award, the International Science and Engineering Fair Award, for his research project, "The Biochemistry of Cells: Cell Constituent Assays of Vigna Sinesis" at the 1997 Southeast Missouri Regional Science Fair held at Southeast Missouri State University. This award is the highest honor possible.

BENTON - The Oran Knights of Columbus sponsored an essay contest for fifth and sixth graders recently. Sixth grade student Cara Scherer won for her entry on "The Value of Manners" and she will receive a plaque.
