New Madrid man enters guilty plea

Tuesday, May 15, 2007

CAPE GIRARDEAU - A New Madrid man has entered a guilty plea to unlawful possession of a firearm.

George W. Dawson, 52, entered his plea to one felony count of being a previously convicted felon in possession of a firearm in a court appearance Monday before U.S. District Judge Catherine D. Perry.

On Nov. 19, 2006, officers with the New Madrid Police Department responded to a complaint to a subject possessing a gun near M&H Package Store on Russell Street in New Madrid. Upon arriving, officers observed Dawson sitting on a bench holding a .223 caliber rifle on his lap.

Due to Dawson's previous felony convictions, he is prohibited by law to possess firearms. He now faces a maximum punishment of 10 years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine. Sentencing is set for Aug. 27.
