Born April 13, 1922, in Mississippi County, to the late George and Minnie Chloe Claxton Simmerman, she had lived most of her life in Charleston where she was a member of the Charleston Church of Christ.
On July 5, 1941, she married Henry Ervin Cates who survives of the home.
Other survivors include: two daughters, Violet Marie Cates and Naoma Fay Cates of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Carl and Donna Cates of Charleston; three grandchildren, Todd Cates and Cory Cates of East Prairie and Carla McMikle of Hurst, Ill.; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Thomas Irvin Cates; and five brothers and one sister.
Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. today at McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston where services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday. Her grandson, Todd Cates, minister of the Church of Christ in Troy; Bill Bradley, minister of the Church of Christ in Morley; and Daniel Bell, minister of the Church of Christ in Charleston, will officiate.
Burial will follow in the IOOF Cemetery near Charleston.
Pallbearers will be: Jeff Johnson, Don Cates, Denis Rapert, Steve Kuykendall, James Larry Smith and Garry Smith.
Honorary pallbearers will be Billy Dieckmeyer.
