Bell City holds off Richland; Advance slips past Bernie

Sunday, January 7, 2007

Trenton Moses was the go-to guy for Advance as he recorded a double-

double to lead the Hornets to a 76-66 victory over the Bernie Mules Friday night.

"He had a good game," Advance coach Joe Shoemaker said of Moses. "Alex Steil has been sick and we tried to pound it inside, and Trent ended up with 32 points and about 14 boards. That's a pretty good game."

For the night, Moses was 12-of-15 from the free throw line as he helped keep the Hornets up by a comfortable margin down the stretch.

But Moses was not the only option for Advance as Steil dropped in a dozen points on the night, while Adam Baker scored 11 and Rusty

Hendricks added 10.

The Hornets (7-4, 2-1 Stoddard County Activities Association) outscored Bernie 20-11 in the third period to build a 48-38 advantage with eight minutes to play.

"The Bernie kids never quit," Shoemaker said. "We pulled out to a 10 or 12-

point lead, but they came back and hit some big shots and kept battling."

Marcus Massey led Bernie with 20 points in the losing effort, and Zach Curry added 11.

Jake Welch poured in 22 points and Jake Owens added 19 to push Bernie to a 58-50 victory in the junior varsity contest.

Luke Steil and Cody VanGennip led the Hornets with 13 and 12 points, respectively, while Blake Seabaugh tossed in nine.

Advance is at Chaffee on Tuesday, while the Mules are off until they host Dexter on Friday.

The Bell City Cubs improved to 9-4 on the season with a 70-52 win over the Richland Rebels.

Will Bogan put up a game-high 29 points to lead the Cubs to victory, while Nick Niemczyk added 21 and Phillip Gross scored 10.

Bell City jumped to a 27-14 lead after the first period of play, but Richland outscored the Cubs 31-27 over the next 16 minutes to keep the score respectable.

Cameron Whittaker paced the Rebels with 15 points, and Drew Thornton tossed in 12.

In junior varsity action, Bell City outscored the Rebels 16-11 in the fourth quarter to post a 49-42 victory.

Jeff Long scored 14 to lead the Cubs, while Ronnie Gross and Skylor Blackler notched seven each in the win.

Both teams are in action Tuesday as Bell City hosts Puxico and Richland plays at Gideon.

Scott City outscored visiting Chaffee 26-6 in the opening quarter and cruised to the win.

Jay Simmons hit seven 3-pointers in a game for the third time this season and led all scorers with 26 points for the Rams.

Andy Hendrix led Chaffee with 16 points, and Gabe Seabaugh had 10.
