BOISE, Idaho -- A friend of the community and veterinarian for 29 years at Orchard Animal Clinic Boise, Paul McWilliams, left us suddenly Wednesday evening, Aug. 22, 2007, of natural causes at St. Luke's Hospital.
Born April 20, 1942, Paul was raised on a farm in Sikeston, Mo. He always loved and cared for the animals there and went on to receive his veterinary degree from the University of Missouri in 1968.
He served as the veterinarian for military scout dogs at the Army training center in Fort Benning, Ga. from 1968-1971. He was transferred to Stuttgart, Germany in 1971 to continue preparing the dogs to be sent to Vietnam for battle duty.
After he returned to the United States in 1977, he opened Orchard Animal Clinic, on Orchard Street, and has worked with many Boise pets and wonderful people since that time.
Paul is survived by his wife, Saundra McWilliams. They met at the University of Missouri and just celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. Also his sister Patsy Koenig and Dr. John Koenig from Bloomington, Ind.; four nieces; and sister and brother-in-law, Sharon and Dr. John Fields, a classmate of Paul's in Veterinary School at the University of Missouri.
Paul valued the many friendships he made over the years in the Boise Bench Lions Club, Rotary Club, Boise Racquet and Swim Club and Zoo Boise. He loved and participated in all of outdoor Idaho--hunting, fishing, skiing, boating, biking--always ready to get out and enjoy the beautiful state.
Military Memorial Services are to be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery, 10101 N. Horseshoe Bend Road, Boise. Services are under the direction of Summers Funeral Home, 1205 W. Bannock Street, Boise.
