SIKESTON - Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Johnson, who had lived on Sikes, moved to Dexter last Thursday.

SIKESTON - William Proffer, general manager of Missouri Utilities in Sikeston, has spent 42 years serving the public. Proffer had always wanted to work for a power company, so in 1924 he applied for a job in Cape Girardeau. After two days the line superintendent there called and employed him on April 1.

SIKESTON - With little relief in sight, Sikeston is experiencing one of the most oppressive heat waves that it has had for a long time. Yesterday's high temperature reading at the weather station registered at 106 degrees.

JEFFERSON CITY - One hundred nineteen local organizations providing services to the elderly and handicapped have been awarded $1,076,755 in state financial assistance for Missouri's 1986-87 fiscal year. Scheduled to receive awards locally are VFW Post 4294 at Charleston. Bootheel Mental Health Center Inc. and Community Sheltered Workshop in Sikeston and the Stoddard County Sheltered Workshop Inc. in Dexter.

SIKESTON - The Sikeston Department of Public Safety's "wild and crazy" DARE vehicle is a winner with young people and now, it has caught the eye of judges in a national contest. The Mustang won first place in the DARE vehicle category of the Eighth Annual Best Police Vehicle Design Competition sponsored by Law and Order magazine and the 3M Company. The car will be showcased in the July issue of Law and Order.

SIKESTON - In the Junior Miss Fourth of July competition, which was held at the River Birch Mall in Sikeston, winners were: second alternate, Denise Mulcahy; queen, Deann Jordan; first alternate, Melissa Dawn Marquis and third alternate, Kelly Moore.
