Monday, May 14, 2007

CARUTHERSVILLE - The body of a Hayti man was recovered from the Mississippi River just after noon Sunday.

A possible drowning was reported to Pemiscot County Sheriff Department at the Boatclub Chute Area, a popular access area to the Mississippi River, around 7:25 p.m. Saturday.

According to Pemiscot County Sheriff Tommy Greenwell, witnesses reported Brian James Hamm, 23, jumped out of a boat to join swimmers in the Chute area.

"Those who were with Hamm stated they had been fishing during the day and boating around and decided to go swimming," said Greenwell in a news release. "It was later learned Hamm could not swim."

Witnesses stated Hamm began struggling in the water. Those who were with him attempted to get him back into the boat but were not able help him.

The Pemiscot County Rescue Squad along with the Missouri Conservation Department began rescue operations. Also assisting in the search and rescue were several other agencies including the Missouri Highway Patrol and the Caruthersville Police.

The body was located at 12:30 p.m. Sunday by members of the Missouri State Water Patrol, Missouri Highway Patrol Division of Drug and Crime Control and the Pemiscot County Sheriff's Office.

Greenwell stated the drowning was accidental and no foul play is suspected.
