CAPE GIRARDEAU - A New Madrid man was sentenced for unlawful possession of a firearm in a U.S. District court.
Dominique M. Betts, 21, was sentenced to 120 months on one felony count of being a previously convicted felon in possession of a firearm Monday. Due to Betts' prior felony convictions, he is prohibited by law from possessing firearms.
On Nov. 20, 2005, a report was made to the New Madrid City Police Department that shots had been fired near Russell Street. Officers responded to the scene and found a Bryco .380 caliber pistol on the sidewalk, at which point the pistol was seized.
The officers received information that Betts had fired the pistol. He was contacted by the police and admitted that he had fired the pistol at the location where the pistol was found and that he had discarded the pistol at the scene.
