SIKESTON - Paving of four streets at a total cost of $15,081.88 was authorized by the city council Monday night at its regular meeting. Portions of East Gladys, Prairie, Hunter and Vernon streets will be paved with asphalt and the plans call for the paving to be of highway specifications.

SIKESTON - The Junior Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a battle of the bands May 19 at the American Legion. Any band may enter whose member are teenagers and residents of Missouri. Members must be at least 13 years of age, but not over 19. The winner will receive a $50 prize, while second place gets $25.

SIKESTON - Jackson handed Sikeston its second loss against an area 4-A team this season, beating the Bulldogs 6-1 at VFW Stadium Thursday.

CHARLESTON - Plans for rebuilding the Mississippi County Courthouse are now a little closer to reality. Commissioners accepted a check for $1,535,000 Tuesday from Savers Insurance Co. for the courthouse fire.


SIKESTON - Cal Crader and Adrienne Collins won the Sikeston Noon Optimist Club's oratorical contest, the zones and the regional competitions with ease. Now they're going for four straight wins by participating in the district competition in May. Anita Sievers, chaired the regional contest.


SIKESTON - Steve Torbett was proclaimed Outstanding New Elk and Gary Ozment is the Officer of the Year for the Sikeston Elks Lodge.
