CARUTHERSVILLE - A Caruthersville man is being treated for a stab wound to the chest and law enforcement officers are still searching for the assailant.
At 11:54 p.m. Thursday, Caruthersville Police were called to the Caruthersville Community Center in response to a report of a stabbing. Upon arrival officers were told the victim had left the area, running east across Ward Avenue toward East 12th St.
Officers found the victim on Walker Street being escorted to his residence. The 35-year-old man had a stab wound to the right side of his chest.
Caruthersville Police Chief Chris Riggs reported the victim refused to identify his assailant, only stating he had been stabbed. The victim was transported to the Hayti Hospital where he was stabilized then transported by Air-Evac to the Med in Memphis.
In interviews with witnesses at the Community Center, officers learned the victim and his girlfriend "had been in a verbal altercation prior to the victim being stabbed," according to a news release from Rigg's office. "The victim had come inside the Community Center bleeding profusely from the chest area."
Witnesses described the victim as very hostile, stating he was pushing and hitting people inside the building before being escorted off the premises.
Riggs said officers received a name of a suspect and are attempting to locate the person for further questioning. The investigation is continuing, according to the police chief.
