60 years ago

SIKESTON - During a high school debate tournament last week in Oran, Sikeston won 12 and lost six. Four Sikeston students were twice chosen as outstanding speakers in their debates.

SIKESTON - The high school mixed choruses, under the direction of Gordon Beaver and accompanied by Becky Wagner, will present their annual winter concert Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Junior High School auditorium.

SIKESTON - The city has been recertified under the workable program by the national office of Housing and Urban Development.

CHARLESTON - Assistance was both requested of and offered to the City Council Tuesday evening in connection with problems at the Charles F. Bowden Civic Center on Elm Street. The Rev. Steve Betts and Ed Mullins attended the meeting, expressing concern about the center and what could be termed unsavory activities in its vicinity.


SIKESTON - The Sikeston R-6 Board of Education voted Tuesday to seek an agricultural exemption to allow school to start before Labor Day this year and approved continuation of the Early Childhood Education program.

BENTON - Man-oh-man, Kelly is tough at home. The Charleston Lady Bluejays found that out firsthand on Monday night, losing 68-45. Charleston played solid basketball in the second half, but failed to accomplish that in the first. Against Kelly, that just doesn't cut it.


SIKESTON - Cathy Bucher's kindergarten class at St. Francis Xavier School collected 100 cans of dog and cat food for the Sikeston Humane Society.


SIKESTON - All baseball and softball fields at the Sikeston Sports Complex will have new fencing for the upcoming baseball season thanks to the recent work by the city.
