SIKESTON - A steering committee to direct the actions necessary on the formation of a proposed community college to serve Scott, New Madrid, Mississippi and Stoddard counties is expected to be named at a meeting at 7 p.m. today at the Rustic Rock.


SIKESTON - The increasing cost of obtaining loans slowed construction in Sikeston during September, John Vaughn, city clerk, said today. Building permits for the last month came to a total of $42,405, $14,620 less than the August figure.

SIKESTON - Over $400 was raised for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital by participants of various sizes and modes of transportation in New Madrid's bike-a-thon Saturday morning.


JEFFERSON CITY - A computer malfunctioned on the first day of the Missouri Lottery's Lotto game, generating the same numbers to people who asked the computer to pick for them. The computer was fixed on Saturday.

JACKSON - The streak is still alive for the Sikeston freshman football team. After Thursday night's 34-0 pounding of the Jackson Indians, the Bulldogs have not been scored on in seven consecutive games. "This team plays well as a unit," said Sikeston coach George Hale. "We have a lot of confidence, but are not overconfident. Right now, it is really hard to pinpoint a weakness."


SIKESTON - Approximately 40 people of the First Baptist Church of Sikeston worked to create "Blessed are the Peacemakers," which was the grand prize-

winning float in the Sikeston Cotton Carnival Parade on Saturday.
