Two attempt to pass forged prescriptions

Tuesday, February 5, 2008

BENTON - One of two persons arrested in connection with passing counterfeit/forged prescriptions at local pharmacies will be in court today.

Akilah Woods, 25, of Memphis is to be arraigned today in Division II of Scott County Circuit Court.

Woods and Byron Walker, 34, also of Memphis were arrested by the Sikeston Department of Public Safety which received a tip Jan. 28 that the couple was passing counterfeit/forged prescriptions at local pharmacies. When officers arrived at Super D's on North Main Street in Sikeston, they took Woods into custody. Walker fled the scene in a vehicle but was located by police a short time later.

After a search of Walker, officers located six counterfeit prescriptions and controlled substances, according to a news release issued by the Sikeston Department of Public Safety.

The Scott County prosecutor's office has charged each with two counts of possession of controlled substance, two counts of forgery, and one count of fraudulently attempting to obtain a controlled substance.

Walker has since posted a $25,000 bond and was released. Woods remains in custody in lieu of the $25,000 bond at the Scott County Jail.
