Wednesday, February 6, 2008

EAST PRAIRIE -- The Portageville Bulldogs earned a key district win over East Prairie, defeating the Eagles 79-68 in overtime.

East Prairie, playing their first game in 10 days, fought back from a 14-point deficit and held a 63-61 lead with less than 10 seconds remaining in regulation. However Portageville's Dominic Trotter hit a game-tying shot as time expired, sending the game into overtime.

The Bulldogs dominated the overtime period and led 72-67 with 1:26 remaining when play was stopped due to bad weather. When play resumed, Portageville hit their free throws down the stretch to ice the game.

Tony Jones of East Prairie led all scorers with 30 points.

Chris Cooper scored 14 points as Kelly pulled off the upset by slipping past visiting Scott City.

The Hawks improved to 9-11, while the state-ranked Rams fell to 13-5. Scott City is ranked ninth in Class 3.
