POPLAR BLUFF -- The Sikeston freshman basketball team lost its first game of the season with a 39-33 setback at the hands of Dexter in the Poplar Bluff Tournament on Wednesday night.

Sikeston (8-1) struggled with turnovers and poor free throw shooting in the loss.

"We came out with a lot better intensity than our last game, but we just turned the ball over too many times," said Sikeston coach Chris Sarakas. "We did play better tonight, but we had way too many careless, unforced turnovers. And we missed some clutch free throws that proved to be a big difference-maker."

Sikeston was led by Dwayne Harris, C.J. Council and Jarian Wims with seven points apiece.

Ben Mills led Dexter with 16 points.

Sikeston will play Poplar Bluff tonight at 7:15 p.m.
