SIKESTON - A cold snap dropped in to Sikeston the past few days. Thursday morning's temperature registered at 18 degrees.
SIKESTON - The second semester at Sikeston High School will begin Jan. 16. Any student who plans to enroll in the semester should call the high school office for an appointment with a counselor.
SIKESTON - Superintendent of Schools Lynn Twitty outlined to the Optimist Club this morning tentative plans for a $1,700 administration building and integration program for the R-6 public schools.
SIKESTON - At Monday night's Sikeston City Council meeting, Frank Ferrell presented a picture of the late W. Raymert Miller to the city. Accepting the gift was Mayor Allen Blanton. Miller was the first city manager of Sikeston, following adoption of the city manager form of government, serving from Feb. 1, 1961 to April 30, 1972.
NEW MADRID - Appointments, a public hearing date and a home for the Chamber of Commerce were among items addressed by the City Council as they convened for the first time in 1987. The council unanimously approved providing quarters for the New Madrid Chamber of Commerce, calling the group an "asset to the community."
SIKESTON - Among the agenda items at today's City Council meeting, will be the final reading of Bill No. 5093, adopting minimum housing quality standards for rental housing units. According to Public Works Director Doug Friend, there should be a lengthy implementation period during which landlords will have ample notice and instructions as how to comply. "These are minimum standards set by the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and are mainly to make sure that the housing is safe," Friend said.
