Downing competed in eight qualifying tournaments hosted by Kennett CC, Hidden Trails CC, Sikeston CC, Cape Girardeau CC, Bent Creek GC, Dalhousie GC, Westwood Hills CC and Kimbeland CC. Points were awarded at each tournament according to the order of finish.
The 11-year-old Downing won seven of the eight tournaments to capture the points lead in his age division. He consistently shot in the low- to mid-40s for a nine-hole round.
By finishing in the top three in his age group -- 155 out of a possible 160 points -- Downing qualified for the year-end two-day Gateway PGA Section Junior Championship hosted by Ballwin Golf Course in St. Louis. He finished 10th.
In addition, Charleston Country Club recently hosted a caddie tournament for junior golfers with a field of fifteen golfers. Downing placed second in the championship flight.
Downing, the son of Scott and Cathy Downing, began playing golf with his dad at the age of 3 and still remembers the plastic golf clubs he started with. He still has the ball with which he made his first par at the age of 6.
When asked about golf rules and etiquette, Downing is very quick to point out how important it is to be honest and follow the rules of the game.
His favorite golfer is John Daly.
Downing dreams of being on the PGA tour someday, but he knows that is very difficult and requires lots of practice and hard work. His parents are just dreaming of a golf scholarship to help with college tuition.
