SPRINGFIELD -- Polly Rose Box Hanks, 81, was born on March 29, 1925, in Violet Hill, Ark., the daughter of Stephen and Mamie (Rose) Box and passed away on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2006 in James River Care Center.
On March 14, 1947, she was united in marriage with Earnest A. Hanks and to this union one son was born. Earnest preceded her in death on July 5, 2005 after 58 years of marriage. Polly was an excellent cook who provided many wonderful dishes for church socials and family gatherings. She loved to sing but the radio was her preferred instrument. Polly and her husband enjoyed gardening and arranging their flowers to provide joy for those in nursing homes and hospitals. Polly took pleasure in the art of ceramics, sewing and canning.
Polly gave the gift of learning to many students throughout her teaching career. She and E.A. made their home in Sikeston for over 30 years. She retired in 1991 after 45 years in education as a teacher and a librarian. She was a wonderful woman who will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Polly is survived one son, Dr. Michael Hanks and his wife Araceli, of Springfield; three grandchildren, Jessica, Alfredo, and Gabriela Hanks all of Springfield; as well as numerous other family members and friends.
Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. tonight at the Klingner-Cope Funeral Home at Rivermonte Chapel 4500 S. Lone Pine in Springfield.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11:30 a.m., Wednesday at the funeral home.
There will be a private burial at Missouri Veterans Cemetery.
