SIKESTON - The Rev. William Herschell Newman, 87, died at 5:40 p.m. Sept. 2, 2006, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau.
Born July 19, 1919, in New Madrid County to the late Lee and Katie Peterson Newman, he was a farmer and a Baptist minister serving churches in Kennett and Matthews and as a missionary for two years at Cane Creek at Poplar Bluff and Washington County at Potosi for a year. Also he served as a pastor at Chambers Park Baptist Church in St. Louis for 18 years before returning to Sikeston in 1978 where he was pastor at Bethel Baptist Church for seven years. A member of the U.S. Army, he served as a staff sergeant during World War II.
On Dec. 2, 1939, at New Madrid he married Glenda N. Holtzhouser, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are one son, Ronald Newman of Conway, Ark.; one daughter, Kay Campbell of Sikeston; and five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Deborah Barker in 1987; three brothers; one sister; and one grandson.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Blanchard Funeral Chapel where services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Jerry Adams, pastor of the Bethel Baptist Church, will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery at Bloomfield.
