SIKESTON - The Sikeston Lady Bulldogs volleyball team lost their first game of the season on the road Tuesday night at perennial power Bernie Mules 25-22 and 27-25.
Sikeston head coach Steve Beydler understood that opening up with Bernie would be a tough chore for his team.
"We always seem to open up with Bernie and it is a good measuring stick for our team," said Beydler. "Bernie is always a tough team to beat but it is a good benchmark for the girls."
Offensively, the Bulldogs were led in kills by Martika Davis with seven and Quinn Kaiser chipped in with six.
Rachel Beydler had a nice night for the Lady Bulldogs leading the team with 18 assists and was effective at serve winning 6-of-7 and served one ace. Kaiser was hot from the service line winning 17-of-18 serves and had six aces in the contest.
Caitlin Underwood led Sikeston with four blocks on defense, while Beydler and Destinee Walker each chipped in with two blocks apiece.
"I was pleased in some areas of our play," said Beydler, "but we still need to work on some areas as well. We will improve throughout the year and this match will not define us. I think we are in for a nice season ahead."
Sikeston dropped the junior varsity contest 25-13 and 25-17 to Bernie.
The junior varsity will be back in action on Thursday as they will compete in the Bernie JV Tournament.
The varsity team will have a nice layoff and returns to action on Sept. 9 at the B.A. Southeast Tournament in Cape Girardeau.
