Undefeated Delta girls win conference tourney

Monday, January 15, 2007

ORAN -- The Scott-Mississippi Conference Girls Tournament wrapped up on Saturday with a hotly-contested championship final.

Delta protected its blemish-free record and most likely its ranking as Missouri's top Class 1 team, but not without a fight.

The Lady Bobcats barely squeaked past the Scott County Central Bravettes, 35-34, to capture the tournament title.

Delta (12-0) led 21-17 at the half, then fended off the Bravettes in the third quarter to retain a slender 26-25 lead going into the final quarter.

Scott Central (9-3), getting seven of its nine fourth-quarter points from leading scorer Brianna Johnson, played the Bobcats even but was unable to make up the one-point deficit.

The Bravettes outscored Delta from the field (31-25), but the Bobcats enjoyed a seven-point advantage at the charity stripe, hitting 10-of-17 free throws. Scott Central went to the line eight times with three makes.

Johnson finished with a game-high 11 points and Jamisha Williams added eight for the Bravettes.

Kaci Menz topped the Bobcats with 10 points followed by seven each from Jodi Menz and Kayla Seabaugh.
