SIKESTON - A dog that was discovered to have rabies was shot by acting chief of police John Ledbetter in front of 107 William St. Wednesday morning.

ORAN - The Head Start program here is in its second week of operation. Enrollment is about 60 children. There are a few vacancies for those who may have been late enrolling their children.

SIKESTON - Recently, Sikeston city officials met with 25 leading citizens of Sunset in an effort to ease the employment situation. City Manager Raymert Miller said that since the meeting at least 50 application have poured into his office for jobs from welder to cook.

ST. LOUIS - Marlan Sue Freed, formerly of New Madrid County, has been elected area president for Northwest County of Landmark Band, St. Louis. Mrs. Freed has been employed with Landmark since 1974 and previously held the position of vice president, commercial and real estate loans.

SIKESTON - Dick Inman, manager of the Board of Municipal Utilities, and Bill Bloemer made a request for a sanitary sewer rate increase at a public hearing conducted at the City Municipal Building on Monday night.

SIKESTON - The death of Bill Emerson may mark the loss of a congressman for citizens in the Eighth District, but far more people seem to see it as the loss of a friend. Blair Moran of Sikeston worked on Emerson's initial campaign in 1980 to represent the Eighth District in Washington, D.C. Moran said with Emerson it was the Republicans' desire to "bring good and decent representation back to this Congressional district."
