NEW MADRID - Fern Thompson Riley, 87, passed away on Saturday, June 24, 2006, at her home in New Madrid.
Mrs. Riley was born in Holcomb on April 2, 1919, one of 11 children of Bertha Fox and Mack Thompson. She attended schools in Holcomb and Kewanee and graduated from Kewanee High School in 1937. Through the years, she attended many of the Kewanee High School Reunions and enjoyed visiting with her former classmates and old friends. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and choir, the New Madrid Civic Club, where she served a term as vice president, and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary in New Madrid. Her work experience included serving as a clerk with the ASC Office and the Selective Service System. She retired from New Madrid High School as a teacher's aide.
She was preceded in death by her parents; nine brothers, Clyde, Arvel, Price, Mac, Ralph, Lynn, Dewey, Hal and Bill Thompson; one sister, Mabel Gooch; one grandson, Robert Riley III; and one great-granddaughter, Alyisa Riley.
Survivors include: her husband of 62 years, Robert A. Riley Sr.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Edwin and Marge Riley of St. Louis and Robert Jr. "Wub" and Sherry Riley of New Madrid; two daughters and one son-in-law, Sheran Riley of Bryan, Texas, and Susan Riley and Prentiss Smith of Baton Rouge, La.; five grandchildren, Lisa Riley of Ballwin, Steffanie Riley Lee (Wade) of Wasilla, Ark., Lindi Riley Fowler (Brian), Ryan Riley (Elizabeth) and John Riley, all of New Madrid; and four great-grandchildren, Riley and Avery Fowler, Matt Riley and Cayden Lee; three stepgrandchildren, Katie Matison (Dave) of Seattle, Prentiss III (Carolyn) of Mobile, Ala., and Leah Hanson of Houston, Texas; and eight stepgrandchildren, Prentiss IV, Christopher, Ansley and Elliott Smith, Luke Jones, Nicholas Hanson and Joey and Morgan Faries.
Visitation will be held at Richards Funeral Home in New Madrid today beginning at 5 p.m. with the rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Rev. Randolph Tochtrop officiating.
Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
