Teachers get ready for first day of school

Thursday, August 10, 2006

Katie Weems, a first grade teacher at Matthews Elementary in Sikeston, puts finishing touches on a bulletin board.
SIKESTON -- Like most teachers throughout the region, Katie Weems has worked since Aug. 1 to prepare her classroom for the first day of school later this month.

Weems is making name tags, arranging desks and sorting books for her students in addition to the regular back-to-school tasks of decorating the room.

This week students are enrolling at their respective principals' offices, receiving classroom and locker assignments for the first day of school, which for most students, will begin by the middle of next week.

At Sikeston R-6, doors will open Aug. 16 with classes in session for a full day. School officials encourage parents to enroll their children before Aug. 15 as the district is hosting a back-to-school picnic for its employees and their families on Aug. 15. Open houses will be scheduled at various times throughout the buildings a couple weeks after school starts.

For example, Sikeston's Matthews Elementary's open house will be Sept. 2. Weems said it's a good idea for parents and their children to visit buildings before school starts in addition to attending open houses.

"It gives parents a chance to see where their child is all day and to meet the person who spends 40 hours a week with their child," Weems said about open houses. "Parents trust us to take care of their children so it's good for them to learn what to expect from the teacher."

The first day of school for New Madrid County R-1 schools is also Aug. 16. Open house for high school and technical skills students will be from 6 to 7:

30 p.m. Aug. 15. Middle school open house is scheduled from 6-7:30 p.m. Aug. 17. Elementary open houses will be conducted at each site from 6-7:30 p.m. Aug. 21. Parents will have the opportunity to meet their child's teacher, become familiar with the curriculum and discuss requirements for individual classes.

Scott County Central School District will begin the new school year at 8 a.m. Aug. 16, for all grades; school will be in session for a full day. Open house for K-12 students will be held from 5:30-7 p.m. Aug. 15.

East Prairie R-2 will begin Aug. 16 with a full day of classes. Open houses will be from 5:30 -7 p.m. Aug. 15 for all grades.

Other schools starting Aug. 16 include Portageville (early dismissal at 11:45 a.m.), Kelso C-7 in New Hamburg, Gideon and Bloomfield.

Kelly schools in Benton will begin with a full day of classes Aug. 17. An open house will be held from 6-8 p.m. Aug. 15. Also beginning Aug. 17 are Oran R-3; Dexter (half-day) and Bernie school districts.

Richland R-1 in Essex and Bell City R-2 schools are among those starting back the earliest; they will begin Aug. 14.

Charleston R-1 students will be able to sleep in about a week longer than the rest of the area's students. They will begin school Aug. 23. Open houses vary by building.

For more information about the new school year, parents should contact their child's school building.
