Essner is named to All-American team

HILLSBORO -- Former Kelly High School standout and the 2005 Standard Democrat Female Athlete of the Year Kelly Essner finished an outstanding freshman season in softball at Jefferson College in Hillsboro.

Essner was named a second team National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-American after leading Jefferson College to a 49-16 record, including an 18-2 mark in conference play and a sweep in the regional tournament to advance to the NJCAA Division I Tournament in Florida.

Although the team managed just a 1-2 record in the tournament, Essner's accomplishments didn't go unnoticed.

She was 15-3 on the mound with an earned run average of 1.43. She had 135 strikeouts in 122 innings pitched.

Essner also had a fantastic offensive season as Jefferson College's leadoff batter. She led the team in batting average (.439), hits (101), runs (59), doubles (25), triples (5), runs batted in (53) and stolen bases (25).

Essner graduated from Kelly High School in 2005 where she was a softball and basketball star, receiving all-state recognition in softball and all-

conference and all-region in basketball.
