SIKESTON - Wind and lightning downed tree limbs and branches around Sikeston Sunday night. No serious damage was reported. Only .17 of an inch or rain was recorded for the period. Isolated power failure resulted during the storm in the central and eastern sections of the town.

SIKESTON - Seven representatives from the Sikeston Department of Public Safety Fire Division plan to attend the Cape Girardeau County Fire Department Muster Parade and Picnic in Jackson Saturday. During the day, area fire departments will compete in events such as the moving ladder climb, bucket brigade and fireball express.
DEXTER - The American Red Cross, in order to meet a need for trained volunteers in the Bootheel, has scheduled a Disaster Introductory Course to be held in Dexter. The duties call for the organization to be ready for immediate action around the clock in every part of the nation.
JEFFERSON CITY - Efforts to make Sikeston an even better place to live are recognized today on the state level. During the 33rd Annual Community Betterment Conference conducted in Jefferson City, Sikeston placed third among communities with populations of 10,500 to 28,000. This category contained the greatest number of competitors, according to Sikeston Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Steve McPheeters.
SIKESTON - Cape Girardeau's Mark Murakami was the big $4,000 winner in the pro class competition at the Sikeston Dragstrip on Saturday. He had a reaction time of .508, running 5.437 and turned 113.64 mph in his 1996 rail.
