CHARLESTON - J.R. "Steve" Mathis, 63, died at 10:25 p.m. Aug. 11, 2006 at Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston.
Born Feb. 13, 1943, at Wyatt, to J.R. Mathis of Charleston and the late Ardella Barber Mathis, he had lived in Mississippi County most of his life where he was employed in farming. He had served with the U.S. Marine Corps and was of the Baptist belief.
Other survivors include: one son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Rhonda Mathis of East Prairie; six sisters and two brothers-in-law, Betty Ruth Passley and Debra Lou and Barry Ward both of Fredericksburg, Va.; Alice Jean Decatur of Charleston; Jo Ann Burk of Anna, Ill.; Donna Gail and Forrest Marshall of Charlotte, N.C. and Tammy Susan Hale of Benton; and two grandchildren, and a special friend, Sissy Bailey of Charleston.
Services were held today at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston. The Rev. Bill Meeks, pastor of the First General Baptist Church of Charleston, officiated.
Burial followed in the IOOF Cemetery.
