SIKESTON - The teacher shortage and how it affects Sikeston's school system was the opening topic of the school board meeting Tuesday. Lynn Twitty, superintendent of schools, reported that "surprisingly enough, the system here is in good shape with teachers for the approaching school year."

Aug. 16, 1986

ORAN - Ricky Eftink, 5, and Sarah Nothdruft, 4, were named Little Mr. and Miss Oran during the 14th Oran Fall Festival Friday night. Ricky is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Rick Eftink of Oran and Sarah is the daughter of Glenn and Susan Nothdruft of Oran. The fall festival is sponsored by the Oran Chamber of Commerce and the Jaycees.

SIKESTON - As Steve Arndt fought to save a majestic Elm from death, workmen across the street destroyed one up to the whine of chain saws. Meanwhile, Arndt worked at the bicycle pump, trying to force a chemical into this 125-year-old tree at Schumacher Financial Services, 368 North Kingshighway.

SIKESTON - Scott County has 1,858 current Aid to Families with Dependent Children cases, 2,902 food stamp cases and 4,526 Medicaid recipients. New Madrid County has 1,191 active AFDC cases, 2,062 food stamp recipients and 2,877 Medicaid households. Mississippi County has 954 AFDC cases, 1,853 food stamp cases and 1,130 Medicaid recipients. The legislation passed by Congress in early August will flush a torrent of additional low-skilled or unskilled people into a job market where the demand for them already may have reached a saturation point.
