DUDLEY -- Helen Cates, 80, died Aug. 16, 2006, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
Born Dec. 12, 1925, in Houston, Texas, daughter of the late Joseph and Bessie Fort Benes, she had lived since 1951 in the Dudley area, where she was a charter member of the Dudley Baptist Church, a leader with the Wilkerson 4-H Club and a member of the National Audubon Society. She and her husband started Cates Orchard near Dudley in 1953.
On Nov. 5, 1943, in Pearland, Texas, she married George Cates who survives of the home.
Other survivors include: one son, Ronnie Cates of Dudley; three daughters, Patti Kinnaman of Bloomfield and Bessie McRoy and Janet Johns, both of Dudley; one brother, John Benes of Baytown, Texas; and five grandchildren.
One son, Timothy Cates; four sisters; and one brother preceded her in death.
Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Watkins and Sons Funeral Home in Dexter, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday. The Revs. Bill Webster of Poplar Bluff and John McFarlen of Myrtle will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Missouri Veteran's Cemetery in Bloomfield.
