SIKESTON - Sikeston's postal employees, like employees of other post offices, went without getting paid last week because Congress failed to pass the treasury-post office appropriation bill.
NEW MADRID - Important changes in the administrative department of both the Lilbourn and New Madrid school systems have been announced. Dr. Frank Whiley, superintendent of the New Madrid School system, has resigned to accept a position at Columbia to do research work in curriculum. Sam Bodine, elementary supervisor at Lilbourn School, has been elected superintendent of the New Madrid system.
SIKESTON - Among the many positive changes inaugurated at Missouri Delta Medical Center is the new gift shop which recently opened near the front entrance. The shop, which opened July 15, is managed by Pam Tidwell.
SIKESTON - The Daily Standard is one of five newspapers in Missouri to be honored by the Missouri State Teachers Association. Bob George, public relations advisor for MSTA, informed The Daily Standard recently of its honorable mention designation for outstanding coverage of education in this area. Eleanor Crowell of Sikeston submitted the newspaper's name to MSTA for this honor.
SIKESTON - Local voters will have the opportunity to decide if the city should charge a local use tax on out-of-state purchases. The tax issue, part of the Aug. 6 ballot, became necessary after the Missouri Supreme Court invalidated portions of the state's Use Tax Legislation, approved by the Legislature in 1991. The tax provided a 1 1/2 percent use tax for local government. In Sikeston's case, the tax generated about $600,000 while in effect.
SIKESTON - The daughter of Pat and Duke McDonald of Sikeston, Brittany will represent Missouri in the Miss Teen All American National Pageant that will be staged Aug. 1-4 at the Miami Airport and Marina in Miami, Fla.
