Chili cooks can vie for honors at competition

NEW MADRID - The New Madrid Chamber of Commerce will host its first "Red Hot Chili Cook Off" Oct. 28 at the Davis Street Park.

The event will give chili connoisseurs from around the area the opportunity to showcase their masterpiece chili recipes, said Margaret Palmer, executive director of the New Madrid Chamber of Commerce.

Cooking teams will set up around the perimeter of the park pavilion at 7 a.m. Oct. 28. Judging will begin at noon and will be based on taste, texture, aroma, color and bite or aftertaste. Awards will be presented at 3 p.m.

Cash prizes will be awarded for first through fifth place. Also several competitions are planned including Best Named Chili, Best Cook's Costume, People's Choice and Best Decorated Voting Can.

Spectators can purchase a bowl and wristband for $5 and visit the competitors for chili samples. The People's Choice kits will go on sale at 10:

30 a.m.

Entry fee for the chili competition is $30 which is due by Oct. 13. There is a late entry fee of $50 and the last day to register is Oct. 23. Rules for the competition are available at the Chamber of Commerce office, 560 Mott St.

Also planned for the day will by the Lion's Club Family Fun Day on the levee road, the Immaculate Conception School Harvest Festival at 6 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Building and the Kids Movie Review at the Dixie Theatre.
