SIKESTON -- The Heartland Wrestling program is getting ready for another season beginning November 2.
We're looking to have our best season yet. We will be honored to have (former Sikeston coach) Marc Stevener, who has led several wrestlers to the state championships and leading Hazelwood Central to a 2nd place finish in the high school championships. With Marc, who has the knowledge on how to teach and get the most out of the kids, we are looking to improve on our techniques and our weaknesses. We are also being helped by first year coach Jerry Winberry, who also placed in the State championships while in high school.
This is our first year working together with the school system and I feel like we are in the right direction on bringing back wrestling to a level that in a few years we will see championships back in Sikeston.
We have some kids in the middle school level right now that have over 80 matches under their belts.
My goal on this program will not change. I'm here to build champions and to see these kids accomplish something on their own, to build confidence and self control. The program is very disciplined and we will run it very strict but we also have it enjoyable for the kids.
Our program travels to several tournaments a year and all the wrestlers will have the opportunity to compete in the AAU state championships. One question most parents ask is, "will my child wrestle kids that have more experience?" The answer in no. We have rookie tournaments for them.
I must thank the Sikeston school system for working along with me and allowing our program to come in and use its facilities. As the Heartland club started we have produced 47 state placers and 12 state champions. And also this past July, I took eight wrestlers to the Show-Me State Games in Columbia and all placed in the top four of their classes.
Signups for the club will be Saturday, October 14 from noon-3 p.m. at Miner Baptist Church. Membership is $40 per wrestler for a yearly season membership.
On the first practice Nov. 2, there will be a meeting for all parents and it will be limited to 15 minutes. There will be a coaches meeting scheduled before the first practice. I will contact you on the date.
