Speakout 6/21

Wednesday, June 21, 2006

I've been reading in the paper about all this fussing about people who don't work and who are lazy and where our tax dollars go. Has anybody ever thought that they also go to these nonprofit organizations, too? I was wondering about one in particular, because every time you turn on the TV it seems like they are out taking care of disaster victims, or cooking hamburgers and frying bologna for the people in the hurricane. And I was just wondering, who is there taking care of the patients if all these bosses and nurses are out doing all this volunteer work in the day and doing stuff that the Red Cross and the other societies used to take care of? Seems like every time you open the paper, this one nonprofit organization is there with half their staff looks like. They got specialty shirts on, guess that was bought with the taxpayers' money. I just wonder, do they have that much staff that they can send that many to everything, every time there's a doing? Is that our tax dollars paying for that? They say they got a grant from the federal government, yet they're asking for donations. They had a big ole grill and fancy cooker there too. Wonder who paid for that? Where ARE all the tax dollars going?

This is in regards to "Immaculate conception." The last time I checked it takes two to get pregnant so it is impossible for girls to get themselves pregnant. Second, as an adult, I know I have made mistakes so I'm sure you can't expect young kids to be perfect. As a taxpayer, there are several things I object to paying for such as, crooked politicians that steal are tax dollars, doctors who cheat Medicare out of millions, a war that is killing our young people, protecting our southern border. So until you become the second coming of Christ, quit judging these youngsters who make mistakes and help them and their innocent babies from becoming statistics.

Would you please warn the public that the titles that are put up over the SpeakOut columns are not sent in by the people that calls in, but they are picked by the paper and put over the top?

I've been reading the paper for forty plus years and until yesterday I couldn't figure out what was missing from your coverage. Then like a flash it struck me. No Little League, no Babe Ruth, no Legion, no girl's softball, no youth scores are being reported. I can only think of two reasons this may be so. Number one, the bean counters of the corporation that owns the paper no longer budget an adequate staff to cover what at least to the powers that be is important. Or number two, the explosion of traveling teams has rendered the Sikeston Little League anarchistic. In other words, the coaches of the gifted children who are beneficiaries of the largess generated by the parents of the less gifted consider the leagues to be mere practice for their future prodigies and therefore don't feel reporting scores are important.

While we were able to get a few photos of little league, we count on cooperation from the league in providing the game scores. Numerous attempts have been made to get the little league results but we haven't had much success until recently when most of the results were brought in. The results will be running in the sports page Scoreboard. We have covered legion games and have been to nearly all of the Sikeston Bulls home games.
