Locals dominate 16th Nunnelee Tournament

SIKESTON -- Local talent performed admirably at the 16th annual Ed Nunnelee Memorial Tennis Tournament, contested this past weekend on Sikeston High School, Sikeston Sports Complex and Sikeston Country Club courts.

Jenni DeWitt, No. 1 player on the Sikeston High School girls team, shared honors as the tournament's most prolific winner along with Mike Ashley of Newburgh, Ind. Both claimed three championships.

DeWitt captured the girls 17-18-year-old singles title with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Tess Marshall, a Sikeston High teammate, then paired with Marshall for the 17-18 doubles crown in a 6-2, 6-1 win over Sarah Detring and Maura Neader, both from Jackson.

DeWitt and Long Le of Sikeston combined to win the mixed doubles championship with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over the Dexter pair of Jay Roberts and Amanda Dooley.

Ashley won the boys 17-18 singles with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Tyler Timms of Lake City, Ark., won the boys 15-16 singles with 6-1, 6-0 win over Cameron Tillett of Paducah, Ky., then picked up his third title with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Lenzie Boatwright of St. Louis in the men's "B" singles.

Joe Recker of Sikeston won his fourth Nunnelee championship as he and Le teamed to defeat Danny Cooper and Marc Leible, both of Sikeston, in the men's "A" doubles, 6-4, 6-3.

Charlie Moore of Sikeston reversed a first-set loss to defeat Darren Neader of Jackson, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1, for the men's "A" singles title.

The Andersons of Jackson, cousins Kim and Shane, won the open women's and men's singles championships.

Kim Anderson defeated Alli Wulfers of Bloomington-Normal, Ill., also last year's runnerup, 6-2, 6-0.

Shane Anderson, in a competitive match, won a three-set marathon over Eric Schrumpf of St. Louis, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

The men's open doubles featured another highly competitive match as Joe Navrkal of Brookport, Ill., and Joey Sloan of Paducah, Ky., second-place finishers in 2005, held on to defeat the brother team of Jason Schrumpf of Cape Girardeau and Eric Schrumpf of St. Louis, 7-4, 7-6.

In the women's open doubles competition, Morgan Kemp and Courtney Kemp, both of Fredericktown, defeated Laura Gant of West Plains and Jan Slusher of Benton, 6-1, 6-0.

Josh Bell of Sikeston and Ray Bell of Tupelo, Miss., defeated the Sikeston duo of Lee Shell and Bob McCord, 6-4, 6-4, to capture the men's "B" doubles championship.

Tyler Timms/Glenn Graham (Lake City, Ark.) def. Clay Matthews/Justin Deere (Sikeston), 6-4, 4-6, 7-6.

Will Lafe/David Berry (Cape Girardeau) def. Cameron Tillett/Matt Presley (Lone Oak, Ky., 6-1, 7-6.

Boys 13-14 singles
