Roundup: Oran blows out Bloomfield
ORAN -- The Oran Eagles' quiet bats awoke for 11 runs in the last two innings of a 12-2 run-rule victory over Bloomfield on Monday.
"The first time through (the lineup) we were way out in front (of the pitch) and pulling our heads off the ball," said Oran assistant Larry Boshell, who assumed the head coaching duties in the absence of Mitch Wood, who was away on school business. "We told them to go back to basics, just like hitting the ball off a tee, and, finally, they figured it out."
Oran (7-1), trailing 2-1, broke open the close ballgame with five extra-base hits, including two home runs, in a six-run fourth-inning rally.
Tyler Beardslee's laser-like double down the third-base line started the fireworks in the fourth.
Joey Williams followed with a two-run homer, his first of the season, over the left-centerfield fence for a 3-2 Oran lead. Chris Asmus' RBI double increased the advantage to 4-2.
Later in the inning, Caleb Seyer rapped an opposite-field three-run homer to right field to push the Eagles ahead 7-2. It was Seyer's second roundtripper in two games and third of the season.
Oran put the game away with five runs in the fifth frame. Tyler Beardslee's two-run single for a 12-2 lead invoked the 10-run rule.
Bloomfield (2-3), behind crafty left-hander Dillon Rickman, held the high-
scoring Eagles at bay early, while putting up single runs in the third and fourth innings.
"He did a good job," said Boshell, of the opposition pitcher. "He mixed it up, changed speeds and we did a horrible job of adjusting."
Oran received solid mound performances from the combination of starter Jaden Pobst and reliever Chris Asmus.
"We got great pitching," Boshell said. "Pobst was on a pitch count because of a little soreness last week, so we wanted to make sure he didn't go too long, then Chris came in and did a good job for us."
Pobst, exiting with a 7-2 lead, improved to 3-0 with a two-hitter in four innings of work.
He allowed two runs -- one earned -- with six strikeouts, one walk and one hit batsman.
Asmus mopped up with one inning of no-hit relief. He struck out two and walked two.
Beardslee, the Eagles' lone multiple hitter, paced the 10-hit offense with three safeties, a double and two singles.
Kody Campbell, Chase Seyer, Paul Bucher, Alex Chastain, Caleb Seyer, Asmus and Williams collected one hit apiece.
Oran goes on the road against Class 4 Poplar Bluff on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
DELTA -- East Prairie pounded Delta 14-2 in a five-inning mercy-rule victory on Monday.
The visiting Eagles improved to 4-3 overall, while evening their Scott-
Mississippi County Conference record at 1-1.
Jordan Mansfield earned the win, allowing one run in four innings on three hits with seven strikeouts and four walks.
Hunter Jones, Zach Secoy, Taylor White, Perry Lucas and William O'Guin topped the East Prairie offense with two hits apiece.
Secoy hammered a two-run homer, O'Guin clubbed two run-scoring doubles and Caleb Hatton drove home three runs with a two-run single and a sacrifice fly.
East Prairie visits South Pemiscot on Monday at 3:30 p.m.
CHAFFEE -- The Chaffee Red Devils had its three-game win streak abruptly snapped by Scott City's Ryan Modglin.
Modglin tossed a no-hitter, sitting 13 of the 15 outs down on strikes, in a 12-0 run-rule win on Monday.
Home team Chaffee (4-6) never threatened, putting the ball in play only three times against the hard-throwing righthander who issued four bases on balls.
Scott City led 4-0 after four innings then busted loose for eight runs in the fifth to close out the contest.
Modglin completed his dream performance with a huge day at the plate, going 2-for-4 -- both home runs -- with four RBIs.
Blake Dirnberger and John Barr chipped in with two hits apiece. Cody Carlisle chased home three runs and Barr two.
Alex Orr took the loss for Chaffee.
Chaffee hosts Dexter on Thursday.
POPLAR BLUFF -- Sikeston finished seventh in the 12-team Poplar Bluff Invitational on Monday.
"We are still chasing Dexter among the smaller class schools but we are narrowing the gap," said Sikeston coach Rick Oetting. "I know my young team is still nervous playing 18 holes but I keep seeing smarter play and better scores."
The Bulldogs posted a team score of 358, 12 shots behind sixth-place Dexter at 346.
Individually, Bill Green led the 'Dogs with an 86 followed by Dakota Trevino's 87 and Dee Bizzell's 88.
Jared Kruger's 97 rounded out the team score.
Team scores were as follows: Glendale (306), Poplar Bluff (315), Cape Central (326), Jackson (337), Northwest (341), Dexter (346), Sikeston (358), Notre Dame (391), Kennett (392), Fredericktown (408), Doniphan (430) and Bloomfield (483).
Sikeston hosts a tri-match against Jackson and Dexter today at the Sikeston Country Club.
POPLAR BLUFF - The Sikeston Lady Bulldogs soccer team defeated Poplar Bluff on the road Monday night to remain undefeated in conference action, with a 2-0 shutout over the Lady Mules.
Sikeston led 1-0 at the half, as Abbi Keefer scored at 23:00 on an assist by Jordi Ferrell.
Allison Blurton iced the game for the Lady Bulldogs with the second goal of the contest at 43:00. Ferrell assisted on the goal.
Sikeston outshot Poplar Bluff 23-9, as Paige Silverthorn secured the shutout for the Lady Bulldogs. Silverthorn recorded nine saves in the contest.
In the junior varsity contest, Sikeston defeated Poplar Bluff 4-0, to improve to 1-1 on the season.
Sikeston (3-5, 2-0) will participate in the Carbondale Tournament on Friday.
