60 years ago

SIKESTON - Truman Bennett of Sikeston, Tuesday, assumed management of the south Kroger Store in Sikeston. He succeeds E.F. Mouser, who was manager for the past 13 years, manager of the store and is retiring after 41 years in the grocery business.

40 years ago

SIKESTON - Trinity Baptist Church members last night pledged funds sufficient to complete the first phase of their church building program.


SIKESTON - The Southeast Missouri District Convention of Future Business Leaders of America will be held at the high school Tuesday. Registration will begin at 6 p.m. Business teachers and business students are invited to attend.

SIKESTON - Gerald Howard has been elected vice president of Missouri's Emergency Preparedness Association. The elections were conducted recently during the warning communications state meeting of the organization in Jefferson City. Howard is director of emergency preparedness for the city of Sikeston.


SIKESTON - They say the third time is the charm. If that is the case, the Sikeston boys' track team must be living a very charmed life. The Bulldogs boys' track team narrowly won the Jackson Invitational Track Meet for the third straight year, nosing out New Madrid County Central 114-113.

SIKESTON - Ken Fowler and a bunch of udder folks helped to get a cow back to its farm after it had escaped Thursday morning. The young cow had left Lewis Farms just west of the city limits and led the city on a goose chase throughout the west end of town. Fowler was assisted by members of the street division, public safety, parks department and many others.


SIKESTON - German delegates got a taste of the Heartland Thursday. Those attending the 13th annual Congress-Bundestag Seminar had lunch at Lambert's Cafe in Sikeston, catching rolls with the best of the tourists.
