New Madrid County R-1 school board reorganizes

Wednesday, April 19, 2006

NEW MADRID - A new member has joined the New Madrid County R-1 School Board.

Jonathan Maloyed was sworn in as a new board member along with incumbent Ralph Barnwell during the April board meeting. Because Maloyed and Barnwell did not have opponents it was not necessary to have an election in April for the two three-year terms open on the R-1 Board.

Following the swearing-in of the board members, the board reorganized. Randy Porter was chosen to serve as president for the 2006-07 school year with board members Harvey Graham to serve as vice president and Kay Rebstock as treasurer. Robin Kimball was appointed to serve as the board's secretary.

Also during the April 5 meeting, resignations were accepted from Martha Matlock, kindergarten teacher at Lilbourn Elementary School, and Patty Vinson, fifth grade teacher at Matthews Elementary.

The board has employed Travis Day as the physical education and health teacher for New Madrid County Central High School. Also Day will serve as head varsity basketball coach and assist in coaching the school football team.

Derek Tipler, whose hiring was announced earlier, was given additional responsibilities as assistant high school basketball coach and assistant football coach.

Personnel transfers approved for the coming school year include Laurie Brittain, who formerly served as a basic skills instruction at New Madrid Elementary and will be the elementary principal for Lilbourn Elementary; and Stephanie Garner will teach second grade at New Madrid Elementary moving from teaching duties at Matthews Elementary.

Approval was given to offer driver's education during the summer. Lennies McFerren will serve as the driving instructor.

In other action by the board, the administration was authorized to seek bids for 38 tables which will be used in the commons area at the New Madrid County Central High School. Also approval was given for the administrative salary index for the 2006-07 school year, which will reflect a similar pay increase as that received by professional personnel earlier this year.
