HAYTI -- The Red Devils' upset bid finally hit the skids in the second half.
Chaffee led 13-8 at halftime, but the Indians' explosive offense finally took over in the second half to pull out the Class 1 District 2 contest.
"I think they just wore us down," Chaffee coach Charlie Vickery said. "It kind of snowballed there at the end."
Chaffee went ahead on the first play of the second quarter when Andrew Hendrix scored on a quarterback keeper from 1 yard out. He kicked the extra point for the 7-0 lead.
Hayti scored a touchdown, but missed the extra point to pull within a point, 7-6, then snagged a safety for the 8-7 lead. But Chaffee answered.
Dylan McAlister scored on a 4-yard run to give the Red Devils the 13-8 lead at halftime.
"In the first half, we were controlling the ball," Vickery said. "The defense, we held them to about 40 yards at the half."
Hayti opened a 22-13 lead at the end of three quarters and even used some defense, recovering a punt in the end zone, to put the game out of reach.
"Our kids played good," Vickery said.
