SIKESTON - Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Sconyers announced the arrival of a daughter born this morning at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

CHARLESTON - Janis Baker, who will become the bride of Harry A. Gilts III of Charleston on Aug. 16, was the guest at a bridal shower July 15 in the youth fellowship hall of the First Church of God.

SIKESTON - In the Sikeston Fastpitch Softball League, the Board of Public Works defeated the Matthews Merchants last night 11-7, keeping the board in contention for first place.

SIKESTON - Potlach Forest narrowly escaped its first defeat by a Connie Mack team this season at VFW Stadium last night. It rallied from a 3-0 deficit to clip Puxico 4-3 in an extra inning.

SIKESTON - A large crowd attended the grand opening of the Ansel Adams "Images of America" exhibit at Savings of America, 820 N. Main St. The exhibit, which features 32 of Adams' masterpieces, opened to the public today. The classic black and white photos, primarily of nature, may be viewed through Aug. 21.

SIKESTON - The hot and humid weather conditions Monday didn't stop Apex Paving of Sikeston from overlaying part of Southwest Street. Workers at the site said the hot temperatures helps with the laying of the asphalt on the road.

CAPE GIRARDEAU - Amelia Pattereson and DeRay Ivie recently competed in the 9th Annual City of Roses Karate Nationals held in Cape Girardeau. Patterson placed third in the point fighting competition and Ivie placed third in forms and another first place win in the point fighting competition.
