Hulshof deserves support for governor

Sunday, August 3, 2008

I'm sorry I have not added my voice with others across the state and endorsed Rep. Kenny Hulshof for the Republican nominee for governor of Missouri. I should have shared my views much earlier. But the truth is, I assumed Hulshof was such an outstanding leader and man of upstanding character, that my small voice would be drowned in the rush to support him.

In fact, I was actually right. Hulshof has gathered massive support in his bid for the nomination. But I am sorry I did not take the time to throw my single, quiet voice behind him much earlier. Not that it would have made a difference in the outcome of Tuesday's primary election. But it would have been the right thing to do.

It's rare that a man of Hulshof's character and integrity comes along in the public service sector. With deep roots in the Missouri Bootheel, Kenny Hulshof is the neighbor you turn to in times of need and the friend you know you can trust. He would make an outstanding governor for our fine state and I hope you'll join me Tuesday in taking that first, important step.

Hulshof's opponent is State Treasurer Sarah Steelman. Ms. Steelman is an outstanding public servant and an outspoken advocate for all Missourians. She's not afraid to take her own path even when that means running against her political party's majority. But the Republican nominee will have to face Attorney General Jay Nixon in November and Kenny Hulshof is clearly better suited for that task.

The more we get to know about Kenny Hulshof, the more we like him. He has a keen knowledge of the needs of agriculture - which is important to our region - and he is a pro-business advocate of growth without government interference. That is an admirable combination and one which we can proudly support.

Kenny Hulshof is the right man for the job at this important time in Missouri. It could be argued that we have lacked adequate leadership in Jefferson City and electing Hulshof will surely reverse that trend.

If character, integrity and honesty are important in the world of politics, then you'll join me and others and cast your support behind Rep. Kenny Hulshof.
